Obituary

Mr. William Howell Lawson, Sr., age 94, passed away while surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at the Clary Care Center in Toccoa.

Born July 1, 1930 in Toccoa, he was the son of the late S. C. Lawson and Callie Walker Heller.

S.C. Lawson founded the Lawson Motor Company in 1937 where Howell went to work at a very young age.  He joined the company full time in 1948 and became owner of the company in 1967 when his father retired.  His son Billy joined him in 1984 until the company sold in 2001.  He attended the First Baptist Church for 94 years, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher (5th grade boys) for many years.  He was a member of the Adult 3 Sunday School Class.  He went on many mission trips, delivered Meals on Wheels, and played the violin in the chrch orchestra.  He was also the director of the Stephens County Food Bank, and was a member of the National Guard.

Family members include his son, Billy Lawson (Lisa) of Toccoa; daughter, Laura Lawson Worthy (Bo) of Eclectic, Alabama; grandchildren, Craig Lawson (Jordan), Corey Lawson, Katherine Moreland (Frank), Leah Nguyen (Justin), Peyton Hanson; great-grandchildren, Naomi Rose Lawson, Emmeline Betty Nguyen, Parker William Nguyen and Reese Moreland; and special niece, Patti Lawson Roberts (Ronnie).

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Shirley Lawson; brother, J. C. Lawson; and sister, Murrell Lawson Elrod.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 5pm – 7pm Monday, June 30, 2025.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Toccoa at eleven o'clock Tuesday, July 1, 2025 with the Rev. Brett Sanders and the Rev. Andy Stovall officiating.

Burial will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers:  Craig Lawson, Corey Lawson, Peyton Hanson, Justin Nguyen, Ronnie Roberts, Joe Sewell and Jack Dunson.  Harold Atkinson will serve as honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Toccoa.

The family would like to send special thanks to Dr. David Yates and staff of Toccoa Clinic, Amedisys Hospice, the Clary Care Center staff, and all of Mr. Lawson's caregivers.
