Obituary

Robert Carl Williams passed away at his home in Toccoa on December 29, 2023. Born on March 8, 1945 in Clarkesville, Georgia, Carl spent his high school years playing football for North Habersham County. After graduating from high school, Carl received a football scholarship to Austin Peay State University to play for the Governors. Carl played quarterback and was a team captain in both his high school and college careers.

As one nephew likes to say, Carl was "legendary". Upon graduating with an education degree from Austin Peay, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Army and was subsequently sent to the Panama Canal Zone. While stationed there he met his future wife Beth.

After service his years with the U.S. Army, Carl and Beth relocated to Tallulah Falls. Carl then accepted his first teaching and coaching positions while Beth finished college. In 1975, Carl accepted both a teaching job and a coaching position in Toccoa for the Stephens County High School. Carl coached football, basketball, and baseball – with football being his favorite. During this time Beth and Carl grew their little family as they welcomed their daughter, Erika in 1981 and their son Jon in 1985.

While Carl and Beth were building their home, family, and teaching careers in Toccoa – Carl moved away from coaching and founded "Clean Sweep Chimney Service". He also worked as a master carpenter. In what little spare time he had, Carl enjoyed continuously chopping wood. He loved wood fires all throughout the fall and winter, he also enjoyed the exercise. Carl was also very enthusiastic about hunting, fishing and being the best father and husband that he could be. He retired from teaching in 2005 after over thirty years of helping to shape young minds – both with book learning and with pushups.

Whether it was as a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a teacher, or a coach – Carl Williams was a valued and wonderful fixture in the community.

Carl leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years Beth, his son Jon, his daughter Erika, and Erika's son Presley. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the Northeast Georgia Food Bank or charity of your choice in honor of Robert Carl Williams.
