Mrs. Mary Evelyn Murray Thurmond Smith, age 94, of Martin, GA, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2022 at Stephens County Hospital with her son by her side.

Born March 10, 1928 in Banks County Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Luther J. and Lela Whitfield Murray. She was a long time member of Tom's Creek Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years. Mary was retired from Safe Co in Stone Mountain and she also worked with Coats and Clark for a number of years. Mary was the last member of her immediate family.

Family members include her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Linda Thurmond of Hoschton, GA; grandsons, Greg and Aimee Thurmond of Monroe, Ga, Scott and Lindi Thurmond of Marietta, GA, and Wes and Glennis Thurmond of Winterville, GA; great-grandchildren, Carlee Thurmond, Casey Thurmond, Luke Thurmond, Nick Thurmond, Grant Thurmond, Dylan Erwin, Weslynn Thurmond, Kalina Thurmond, Tucker Jacks, and Levi Jacks; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, William Grady Thurmond; her second husband, Robert Doyle Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Grady Michael and Stephanie Thurmond; brothers, Hollis Murray, Horace Murray, Arlou Murray, and Fred Murray; and a sister, Pauline Mouchet.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 5pm – 8pm Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

Funeral services will be held at one o'clock Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Tom's Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Marcus officiating.

Burial will follow at Tom's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The following grandsons will serve as pallbearers; Greg Thurmond, Scott Thurmond, Wes Thurmond, and great-grandsons, Casey Thurmond, Luke Thurmond, Grant Thurmond, and Dylan Erwin.
