Mr. Henry Max Thomas, age 85, of Toccoa, GA, passed away Friday, May 14, 2021 at Piedmont Athens Regional.

Born March 15, 1936 in Eastanollee, GA, he was a son of the late Tinsley and Sallie Mae Stowe Thomas.

Mr. Thomas retired as Fire Chief from Toccoa Fire Department in 1996 after 38 years of service.  He was a member of Liberty Hill Church where he served as a deacon and was very involved as a Gideon.  He served in Army National Guard and as a past president of the Fire Chief Association of Georgia.  Max spent his free time helping develop and train volunteer firefighters in the area.  He was also a member of the Toccoa Optimist Club.

Family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Joyce Thomas of Bethlehem, GA; grandson, Bryce Thomas of Bethlehem, GA; and brothers and sister-in-law, Jackie and Sheryl Thomas of Greer, SC and Buddy Thomas of Richmond Hill, GA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggie Jo Smith Thomas; a brother, Melvin Thomas; and his sister, Mozzelle Moore.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 5pm – 8pm on Monday, May 17, 2021.

Funeral services will be held at eleven o'clock Tuesday, May 18, 2021 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Cody Kelley and the Rev. Roger Whiten officiating.

Burial will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

The Toccoa Fire Department will serve pallbearers and honorary escorts.
