First Sergeant Thomas McCay (Max) Freeman, age 88, of Martin, passed away on May 30, 2025.
Born on July 22, 1936 in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Joe and Jo Rayma (Jody) Freeman. He was a graduate of Lavonia High School and he attended Georgia Military College.
First Sergeant Freeman retired after 30 years of service from General Telephone Company and the Georgia National Guard. He was a member of Martin Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was a member of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of Georgia and the United States, Georgia Farm Bureau, Lions of Georgia, and Franklin County Cattlemen's Association all of which he served in numerous leadership positions throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Williams Freeman. He is survived by his second wife, Brenda Crisp Freeman; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Melanie Freeman of Hartwell; and grandson, William (Beau) Freeman of Saint Simons Island.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 3rd from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Roy Rogers and the Rev. Brian Stephens officiating.
Burial will follow at Martin Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Army National Guard.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Alan Mitchell, Len Stovall, Dennis Black, Clay Black, Chan Cabe, and Steve Crisp.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. At other hours, the family will be at the home.
